"Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" is one of the most useful books on lighting. I have been a lighting designer for a few years now, and have read many many books on lighting, theater and concert. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" goes into great depth for designing with intelligent lighting, as well as using fogs, hazzers and pars. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" also gives great information on all companys from which to buy these items, and the many different ways to control them. "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" is a definite winner with my company and I. I will continue to refer "Concert Lighting : Techniques, Art, and Business" to all associates in my field, as well as in others.

Discovering Stage Lighting

Francis Reid
Taschenbuch - 144 Seiten (Dezember 1998)
Focal Press; ISBN: 0240515455
Preis: DM 68,57
(EUR 35,06)

Synopsis

Exploring the use of light in the theatre, this text places particular emphasis on the interaction of conflicting visual aims. The projects included cover all the major scenarios likely to be encountered by students.

This is almost a lab manual or self study guide on creating lighting effects. Reid gives some technique information but the core of the book is a series of exercises/design problems which you can explore on your own. The way to learn how light behaves is to use it and Reid's problems provide a structured framework to experiment with one aspect at a time.

Stage Rigging Handbook

Jay O. Glerum
Taschenbuch - 224 Seiten (1997)
Southern Illinois University Press; ISBN: 0809317443
Preis: DM 64,24
(EUR 32,85)

Leserrezension

Stage Rigging Handbook is an excellent book on a subject that's often ignored or glanced over in tech theater books. It's very hard to find, good, authoritative information on stage rigging, but Glerum is "The" authority. The book is packed with information and photos. It clearly covers the physics involved in rigging, the types of equipment (both old and new), the maintenance, and the do's and don't of the craft. It's not always totally clear, but the wealth of practical, and in many cases, vital information more than makes up for it. If you're a TD or Director that's just inherited a house with a fly loft, you must read this book. It sounds melodramatic, but it's true--lives may depend on it.

The Lighting Art

The Aesthetics of Stage Lighting Design

Richard H. Palmer
Gebundene Ausgabe - 251 Seiten (August 1993)
Prentice Hall; ISBN: 0135010810
Preis: DM 155,15
(EUR 79,33)

Oddly, this is both the most "artistic" and most technical of the books. It deals both with lighting from an aesthetic/design unity point of view and with the science of achieving the effects. You will get everything in this book from discussions (and pictures) of classicical lighting designs through color psychology, optics, and how visual physiology interacts with color physics to actually determine what the audience will perceive in different situations. I wouldn't recommend this as a first book on lighting but more as a reference that you will find yourself going back to to solve problems.

Light on the Subject

Stage Lighting for Directors and Actors and the Rest of Us

David Hays
Taschenbuch - 173 Seiten (November 1989)
Limelight Editions; ISBN: 0879101261
Preis: DM 28,96
(EUR 14,81)

This is a great book for designers to read and an even greater one for designers to give to other participants in the process of making theatre. Hays goes into next to no detail on the technique of lighting but rather beautifully explains what lighting can and should do in the theatre. He provides the tools needed to talk intelegently about lighting. The book also has wonderful excerpts from all sorts of literary sources describing different qualities of and experiences with light.
